The cyclone triggered precautionary measures by the authorities in both India and Pakistan. In Gujarat, more than 2 lakh people were evacuated from low-lying areas and coastal districts, while schools and colleges were closed in several districts. The state government also deployed teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police for rescue and relief operations. In Pakistan, the provincial government of Sindh declared a state of emergency in six coastal districts and set up relief camps for the affected people. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a red alert for Karachi and other coastal areas, warning of urban flooding, waterlogging and disruption of transport and communication systems.
Cyclone Biparjoy is the second cyclone to hit the Arabian Sea coast this year, after Cyclone Tauktae in May, which caused widespread damage and casualties in India and Pakistan. The frequency and intensity of cyclones in the Arabian Sea have increased in recent years due to climate change, according to experts.
